Asking the Right Questions: A Memory Care Tour Checklist

Chapters Living bookmark

As you consider a memory care community, there may be countless questions you want answered. The tour itself will be filled with helpful information, seeing the spaces, programs, and routines firsthand. In the midst of visiting a community, it’s easy to forget to get answers to some key questions. We have created a checklist of questions to bring with you on your next senior living tour.

Personal Living Space

Having a private living space decorated with personal items creates a comfortable place to call home. For seniors with memory loss this personalization adds to a vital sense of autonomy and comfort. Ask the following questions to assess the living spaces available in the community:

  • Are the rooms private?
  • Are rooms furnished or unfurnished?
  • Is housekeeping included? What about other services?
  • What customizations are available to the space? What control do residents have?

Engaging Activities

Activities and events not only spark joy but also exercise the brain. Ask these questions about their social calendar to see if it seems like a vibrant, engaging community. For seniors with memory loss, ask about specific support and accommodations available to facilitate participation in activities:

  • What kind of activities are available to residents?
  • Do you have memory enhancing activities or programs?
  • Can I see an activity and events calendar?
  • How do you support/facilitate participation for residents with memory loss?

  • What is the staff-to-resident ratio?
  • How many RNs or LPNs are on staff? And are they available 24/7?
  • Does your staff have training or certifications related to caring for people with dementia? Is there ongoing training?

Medical Services

Onsite medical services allow for consistent care of your loved one. These questions will help you understand the care support available in communities:

  • What medical services can memory care residents access?
  • Which health markers are checked regularly?
  • Is there access to therapy services?

Safety and Security

A safe and secure home will provide peace of mind for both residents and their loved ones. Pay attention to how the space and staff contribute to the sense of safety.

  • Do hallways have handrails, lighting, and other safety features?
  • How do you strike a balance between keeping memory care residents safe from wandering while maintaining a space that doesn't feel overly restrictive?
  • What on-call services and notification systems are available for emergencies such as falls?
