Nutritious & Delicious: The Importance of Nutrition in Senior Living Communities

Chapters Living bookmark

Good nutrition is essential for seniors to maintain physical strength, cognitive health, and overall well-being. However, meal prep (and the dirty dishes that come with it) can become a challenge for older adults. At Chapters Living, our Culinary Directors plan and make nutritious (and delicious!) meals so our residents can thrive! Here’s how we create wholesome meal plans for our residents.

Making a Colorful Plate

A well-balanced diet incorporates a variety of foods including proteins, carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables. A study from the American Academy of Neurology found that eating a variety of colorful foods rich in flavonoids (like strawberries, oranges, peppers, and apples) can lower risk of cognitive decline by 20%. The right nutrients help seniors maintain their strength and energy, boost their immune system, prevent and manage chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure, and even supports mental health. All of these factors contribute to a more enjoyable lifestyle for our residents. Our Culinary Directors make sure to build colorful plates with fresh ingredients to ensure our residents are getting everything they need for proper nutrition.

Dietary Restrictions and Flavor Preferences

At Chapters Living, we cater to all palettes, including those with dietary restrictions. This can look like providing soft, easy-to-chew food options, substituting out foods that interact with medications, and having wholesome snacks available. Navigating special diets while still providing variety and flavor can feel overwhelming to seniors. Our staff relieves the mental burden by providing exactly what our residents need!

The Flavor of The Familiar

When it comes to memory care, providing opportunities for residents to experience familiar and memorable things is paramount. Our Culinary Directors integrate dishes into the dining room menu that are special to our residents. Doing so is another way we help our residents feel comfortable and secure. (Plus, it gives us a reason to try all sorts of new dishes!)

At Chapters Living, we understand the importance of nutritious meal plans that promote the health and wellness of our residents. Our culinary team handles everything, allowing seniors to focus on enjoying their food and the company around them! By emphasizing balanced, flavorful meals and addressing individual needs, we help our residents lead healthier, more enjoyable lifestyles.
